New-Generation MyKad Will Not Affect SARA Balance

PUTRAJAYA: MyKad holders who switch to the new-generation MyKad need not worry about losing their Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) balance or eligibility, as all related records will remain in the system.

National Registration Department (JPN) Identity Card Division Director Muhammad Asraf Sukadi said SARA balances and eligibility are not stored in the MyKad itself but are recorded in the SARA system.

“MyKad is used as a means of verifying recipients and for purchasing essential goods at participating shops or supermarkets,” he said, based on frequently asked questions (FAQ) for the public.

He explained that switching to the new-generation MyKad does not mean that the SARA balance or eligibility will be lost, as the records will continue to be accessed through the SARA system.

Elaborating, Muhammad Asraf said the new-generation MyKad can be used for government assistance or subsidies that use MyKad as a means of verification or redemption, subject to the eligibility requirements set by the respective agencies.

He added that not all existing MyKad holders are required to replace their cards with the new-generation MyKad as long as their current cards are not damaged.

“However, holders of the Plastic Identity Card (KPP), High-Quality Identity Card (KPT) and MyKad without a ghost image are required to replace them with the new-generation MyKad,” he said.

However, he said the Touch ‘n Go facility will no longer be available on the new-generation MyKad.

Users who wish to continue using the service can use the Touch ‘n Go eWallet or a separate Touch ‘n Go card, he said.

On May 7, the media reported that the new MyKad, which is set to be introduced, will feature 53 security features, including Quick Response (QR) code scanning for enforcement purposes.
