SUKMA: Selangor Surpasses 80-Gold Target, Now Eyes Overall Champion
The Selangor contingent managed to surpass the 80-gold medal target on the second last day of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) today, thus further strengthening their position to emerge as overall champions in the Games which will conclude tomorrow.
That success came through the women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team which defeated Penang 3-1 in the final at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council Convention Centre.
Selangor’s gold medal tally continued to increase as the Red Giants contingent now collects 97 golds, 71 silvers and 69 bronzes, leaving their closest challenger, the Federal Territory, far behind with 50 golds, 49 silvers and 52 bronzes.
Terengganu, meanwhile, is in third place with 41 golds, 44 silvers and 35 bronzes.
Swimming was among the biggest contributors to Selangor’s success when they emerged as overall champions of the sport with 20 golds, seven silvers and 11 bronzes.
On the final day of swimming competition today, Selangor added three more gold medals, including through the host’s sensational swimmer, Eliza Ai Shen Tan, who completed her SUKMA debut with seven gold medals.
Eliza won the women’s 50-metre (m) freestyle event with a time of 26.44 seconds, thus erasing the Games record of 26.50 seconds held by Leung Chii Lin which had stood since 2008.
The host swimmer had previously also won gold in the 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle, mixed 4x100m medley and women’s 4x100m medley events, besides setting a national record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 56.78 seconds.
In the diving event, the 14-year-old athlete, Ayu Syuhaida Khairul, created a surprise when she won gold in the women’s individual 3m springboard event after collecting 237.20 points.
In other developments, Pahang redeemed their disappointment in the 2024 edition in Sarawak when they emerged as men’s hockey champions after defeating Penang 4-2 via penalty shootout in the final at the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium.
In the track cycling event, Johor rider, Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid, emerged as champion of the women’s sprint event after defeating Selangor’s representative, Yong Ann Tung, 2-0.
With 12 more gold medals to be contested on the final day tomorrow, Selangor still has the opportunity to add to their medal collection before the Games conclude, thus strengthening their efforts in chasing the overall champions title on home ground.
