Colombia Earthquake: PM Anwar Expresses Condolences

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the strong earthquake that struck western Colombia yesterday.

In a post on Facebook, Anwar said Malaysia stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia following the strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which has claimed more than 100 lives and caused widespread destruction.

“I am saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia yesterday, the strongest to hit the country in decades.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Malaysia, I extend my condolences to the families of those who have perished and our sympathies to all those affected,” he said.

Anwar also paid tribute to the rescue workers and volunteers involved in the search for survivors amid ongoing aftershocks.

“Malaysia stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia during this difficult time. We pay tribute to the rescue workers and volunteers who continue to search for survivors amid ongoing aftershocks and pray for the recovery of those injured and the safety of those still missing.

“We join the international community in praying that the people of Colombia are given strength and fortitude in the days ahead,” he said.

The earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, with its epicentre in the Chocó region, causing widespread damage in several areas including Cali, Pereira and Manizales.
