KUALA LUMPUR: The fire at the Selangor Wholesale Market, Pusat Bandar Putra Permai, Seri Kembangan here, was successfully fully extinguished at 6.20 a.m. today.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) State Operations Assistant Director, Ashrul Riezal Asbar, said operations are now focused on inspection work and extinguishing remaining fire debris.

Ashrul said his team is awaiting the arrival of an excavator to clear the rubble to ensure no victims are trapped.

“The fire was successfully fully extinguished at 6.20 a.m.

“Inspection work and extinguishing of remaining fire debris are actively being carried out, in addition to waiting for an excavator to clear the rubble to ensure there are truly no victims,” he said in a statement today.

Ashrul said JBPM Forensic Unit officers have also arrived at the location to conduct investigations.

He said the fire involved shop lots selling electrical appliances and kitchen equipment at Block B4 of the wholesale market.

The premises, covering an area of approximately 400 square metres, were 90 per cent destroyed, but no casualties have been reported so far.

Earlier, BH reported that JBPM personnel faced high risks while extinguishing the massive fire, following the presence of approximately 2,000 methane gas canisters inside the premises, which triggered several explosions in the early stages of the incident.

The operation also faced constraints when five nearby fire hydrants could not be used as they were under the supervision of private parties, in addition to the fire spreading rapidly due to strong winds.

The fire also spread to several nearby premises, but was successfully contained from spreading to the main building of the market, located about 50 metres from the incident site.
