SHAH ALAM: A total of 50 workers at a paper factory, believed to have been sound asleep, managed to escape after the premises caught fire in this district today.

All the foreign workers staying at the hostel were said to have managed to save themselves and get out of the location.

Selangor Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division Assistant Director, Ashrul Riezal Asbar said his team rushed to the location after receiving an emergency call at 1.46 am.

He said the operation involved a team of 11 personnel including officers and fire engines from the Shah Alam, Sri Andalas and Klang Utara Fire and Rescue Stations.

“Inspection found that the fire involved a Class B factory building measuring 100 x 200 square feet.

“The estimated percentage of the fire is approximately 30 per cent and no casualties were involved. The workers’ hostel is at the rear and all 50 occupants are safe,” he said this morning.

Ashrul Riezal added that the fire is believed to have started from a pile of paper and was successfully brought under control at 2.50 am.

“Firefighting operations are still ongoing and we are waiting for excavator assistance to facilitate the operation,” he said.
