WASHINGTON: Israel has been accused of stoking tensions by sharing information with the United States (US) regarding a new and ‘specific’ plan allegedly by Iran to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to local media reports on Thursday.

The report emerged amid fresh attacks between Washington and Tehran, raising concerns that a large-scale conflict could reignite.

CNN reported that the US had been monitoring a ‘continuous stream’ of intelligence information regarding a possible plan to assassinate Trump, but the warning from Tel Aviv was new and involved a specific plot.

The Wall Street Journal, also citing unnamed sources, alleged that the intelligence information described a ‘new’ plot.

The assassination plot was taken seriously by the US after Tehran had previously vowed to exact revenge against Trump following his order to kill senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in January 2020 during his first term in office.

The Republican leader, who attempted to project bravery, however, his use of an old aircraft to leave Turkey after the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit has raised questions among many parties.

Trump boarded an old Air Force One aircraft while the new jet gifted by Qatar was sent ahead to Britain before switching planes and continuing the journey to Washington.

The switch from the new aircraft on his first overseas flight sparked speculation that it may have been due to the alleged insufficient security features.

The New York Times reported that the move was made at the request of the Secret Service as a precautionary measure.
