RAUB: A durian seller was accused of breaking into a Genting Highlands casino room and taking 1,160 chips worth more than RM4.6 million that belonged to Genting Highlands Berhad in October of last year. The charges were brought before the Magistrates’ Court here today.

The 45-year-old Lee Kian Keong entered a not guilty plea after Magistrate Siti Aisyah Ahmad read the charges.

The charge sheet states that on October 28, 2023, at 7:12 a.m., the accused and three other individuals who were previously charged broke into the Twilight 3 room at Sky Casino Genting Highlands and took 1,160 chips valued at RM4,607,800 that belonged to Genting Highlands Berhad.

The charge was prepared in accordance with Section 457 of the Penal Code and read in conjunction with Section 34, which has a five-year maximum sentence in jail and a fine.

If stealing is involved, the sentence may be increased to 14 years in jail. If the offender commits the same crime again, they may also be fined or subject to caning.

A bail of RM15,000 with one surety was suggested by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Zamharir Muhammad Zuhid for the accused.

The accused’s attorney, Dinesh Muthal, asked for a reduced bond, pointing out his client’s erratic income as a seasonal fruit (durian) seller and his need to provide for his mother, who is 70 years old.

The court scheduled the case’s mention for July 26 and granted bail of RM10,000 with one surety.

In November of last year, three more males entered not guilty pleas to the same accusation in the Bentong Magistrates’ Court. – BERNAMA
