Husband And Wife Arrested After Fleeing Scene Of Road Crash

KUALA LUMPUR: A married couple has been detained to assist in investigations into a viral accident involving a Perodua Kembara vehicle along the Federal Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur on June 20.

Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, said both suspects, aged in their 50s, were arrested by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters at around 9 pm on Wednesday.

“A remand application for both suspects was filed today, and the Magistrate allowed the male suspect to be remanded for four days until July 5, while his wife was released on police bail after her statement was recorded.

“The investigation papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office in the near future for a decision on the case,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Shamsudin advised all road users to always comply with traffic laws to avoid any untoward incidents, and stressed that police would not compromise with those who flout the rules.

“Members of the public with information regarding the incident are urged to contact the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters Traffic Investigation Officer, Sergeant Kumaran Murugaya, at 03-79662222, or to come forward to the nearest police station to assist with the investigation,” he added.

Previously, the media reported that police were actively tracking down the driver of the Perodua Kembara who had fled after driving dangerously, resulting in a crash on the Federal Highway on June 20.

Shamsudin was reported as saying that investigations revealed the incident occurred at around 6.10 pm, when the vehicle was being driven by a 59-year-old local man from the direction of Shah Alam towards Kuala Lumpur.

He added that the case would be investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
