PAS MP Nik Zawawi Apologises Over Remarks Allegedly Insulting Prophet’s Companions

KUALA LUMPUR: Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh has issued a public apology following criticism over remarks allegedly perceived as insulting four companions of Prophet Muhammad SAW.

In a statement shared through the Facebook page of Dewan Ulamak PAS Pusat on Wednesday, the Pasir Puteh Member of Parliament admitted that he had been less careful in presenting information and delivering his speech.

“With humility, I sincerely apologise for the mistake,” he said.

Nik Zawawi clarified that he never intended to degrade or insult the honour of the individuals revered in Islam and highly regarded by Allah SWT.

According to him, the original intention behind his remarks was to explain and emphasise the greatness of the Islamic message brought by Prophet Muhammad SAW in transforming the social culture of the jahiliyyah era into a more civilised and dignified society.

He also stressed that he takes full personal responsibility for the matter, adding that the issue does not reflect the stance or leadership of Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).

“I take full responsibility for this matter as my personal mistake, and it is in no way related to the position of PAS or its leadership,” he said further.

Nik Zawawi also expressed hope that Allah SWT would forgive his shortcomings and accept his efforts in spreading dakwah with wisdom and compassion.

The controversy erupted after several videos from a religious lecture went viral online, allegedly showing Nik Zawawi making remarks about four companions of Prophet Muhammad SAW: Abu Bakar as-Siddiq, Umar al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib.

The speech was reportedly delivered during the “Ceramah Perdana: Rakyat Bangkit” event held in Kuala Terengganu on May 8.
