Myanmar Reduces Sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi, Grants Amnesty to Thousands of Prisoners

Myanmar has reduced the prison sentence of ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and granted amnesty to thousands of prisoners, in a move announced by authorities following a broader pardon initiative.

According to Suu Kyi’s lawyer, her original 27-year sentence has been cut by one-sixth. However, it remains unclear whether the 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner will be allowed to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest or in another form of detention. She has been held since a military coup in 2021 and has not been seen publicly since her lengthy trials concluded.

The military-backed administration, led by Min Aung Hlaing, also announced a wider amnesty covering 4,335 prisoners. Among those released is former president Win Myint, who served from 2018 until his removal during the 2021 coup.

State media reported that Win Myint was granted a pardon along with a reduction of his remaining sentence under specified conditions. Officials have not provided detailed clarification on the terms of the releases.

The United Nations welcomed the developments cautiously, noting the importance of broader political progress. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for the “swift release of all those arbitrarily detained” and called for conditions that allow a credible and inclusive political process in Myanmar.

The 2021 military takeover, which removed Suu Kyi and Win Myint from power, triggered a nationwide civil conflict that continues to destabilize the country. Critics and Western governments have repeatedly described subsequent political processes as lacking legitimacy, citing restricted opposition participation and ongoing repression.

Analysts say the latest amnesty appears to be part of periodic pardons issued by the military authorities, but it does not yet signal a clear path toward meaningful political reconciliation or resolution of the ongoing crisis.
