CYBERJAYA — The Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA), through Yayasan PEKEMA, allocates about RM2 million annually for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, which cover various forms of assistance for vulnerable groups nationwide.

PEKEMA president Datuk Mohamed Nazari Noordin said the funds are channelled consistently throughout the year based on assessments and approvals carried out by the foundation’s secretariat.

He said among the main focus areas of Yayasan PEKEMA’s CSR initiatives are medical treatment assistance, education support, disaster relief for incidents such as floods and fires, as well as financial aid for those facing economic hardship.

“We allocate between RM100,000 and RM200,000 every month to help those in need. All applications undergo a verification process before approval,” he told reporters after the Go Green Charity Run 2.0 organised by PEKEMA today.

The event saw the participation of 700 runners across the 5-kilometre (km) and 10-km categories.

Commenting on the second edition of the run, Mohamed Nazari said the programme served not only as a sports activity but also as a platform for PEKEMA to reach out to the community and extend assistance to deserving groups.

In conjunction with the event, PEKEMA contributed RM15,000 to two tahfiz centres and RM30,000 to 10 former national athletes, including para-athletes, in recognition of their contributions to the country.

In a separate development, Mohamed Nazari said the electric vehicle (EV) brand Dongfeng, brought in by the association, currently offers three models in Malaysia — the Dongfeng Box, Vigo and 007.

He said that although the local EV market has become increasingly competitive with the entry of various brands, PEKEMA remains confident that Dongfeng will continue to gain traction among Malaysian consumers.
