KUALA LUMPUR: A nine-year-old girl is feared drowned after she was swept away by strong currents in a drain at Bandar Mahkota Cheras on Friday evening.
The incident occurred near Sri Hijau Condominium, where the child is believed to have fallen into the drain while attempting to retrieve a ball.
According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, an emergency call was received at approximately 7.08pm. A rescue team from the Kajang Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene, arriving about 14 minutes later.
Operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said initial findings indicate that the drain’s water current was strong at the time of the incident, causing the child to be swept away rapidly.
Search and rescue efforts are currently ongoing as authorities work to locate the missing girl. Residents in the area have been advised to stay cautious, especially during periods of heavy rain when water levels and currents can rise suddenly.
