KUALA NERUS: A total of 80,672 units of Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) worth approximately RM6 billion have been built nationwide since the programme was introduced in 2002.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Datuk Dr. M. Noor Azman Taib said of that total, 79,260 units have been completed while the remainder are at various stages of construction.

He said Kelantan recorded the highest number of RMR implementations with 12,156 units completed and another 57 units still under construction.

“Terengganu, meanwhile, recorded 10,286 completed units and 154 units still under implementation, while Johor recorded 8,794 completed units and another 145 units still under construction. RMR is a scheme with a multiplier effect, created specifically to help target groups own their own homes.

“It is part of the implementation of the National Housing Policy which emphasises aspects of access and affordability for the people to own homes,” he said at the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) Key Handover and Offer Letter Ceremony for Terengganu at Dewan Ehsan, Felda Wilayah Timur, here today.

M. Noor Azman said since 2002, Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) has built nearly 80,000 RMR units nationwide to help low-income groups own their own homes.

He said each RMR unit comes with three bedrooms and two bathrooms with a floor area of 750 square feet and is sold at RM90,000.

“The government provides a subsidy of RM20,000 for each unit while the remaining RM70,000 is an interest-free loan repayable over a period of 17 years,” he said.
